Vision Screenings and Back-to-School Eye Health Tips
Posted at 3:29 PM on Jun 12, 2025
As kids head back to school, we’re all focused on the essentials—new backpacks, sharpened pencils, and the perfect pair of sneakers. But one thing that’s often overlooked? Their vision.
Clear vision is key to a successful school year. From reading the whiteboard to staying focused on assignments, your child’s eyesight plays a bigger role than you might realize. At Northwest Family Clinics, we recommend making vision screenings part of your family’s back-to-school checklist—and we’re here to help you know what to look for, what to expect, and when to follow up with an eye specialist.
Why Vision Screenings Matter
Many children don’t realize they’re having trouble seeing—they’ve simply adapted without knowing something is off. And because vision changes can happen gradually, they often go unnoticed until they start to interfere with learning or behavior.
In fact, studies show that 1 in 4 school-aged children has a vision issue that may impact their success in the classroom.
That’s why routine screenings—especially before the start of a new school year—are so important.
What Happens at a Vision Screening?
At your child’s well-child visit, we’ll perform a basic vision screening appropriate for their age. This typically includes:
Visual acuity tests (reading letters or shapes on a chart)
Eye alignment and tracking checks
Color vision evaluation, depending on age
A general look at the structure and health of the eyes
These screenings are a great first step, but they don’t replace a full eye exam. If we notice anything unusual—or if your child has symptoms like squinting, frequent headaches, or struggles with reading—we’ll recommend a follow-up with an optometrist or ophthalmologist.
Signs Your Child Might Be Having Vision Trouble
Keep an “eye” out for these common signs that your child might be struggling to see clearly:
Squinting or tilting the head
Holding books or screens very close
Rubbing eyes often
Frequent headaches—especially after reading or screen time
Avoiding close-up activities or complaining about blurry vision
Trouble maintaining focus at school
If you’re noticing any of these signs, don’t wait—schedule a screening or talk to your provider. Catching problems early can make a big difference in your child’s learning and confidence.
Tips for Supporting Eye Health All Year Long
Here are a few simple ways to protect and support your child’s vision throughout the year:
1. Limit Screen Time
Digital devices are hard on little eyes. Encourage breaks with the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
2. Encourage Outdoor Play
Research shows that kids who spend more time outside have a lower risk of developing nearsightedness (myopia). Fresh air and sunlight do wonders for the eyes and the brain.
3. Make Healthy Food Choices
Nutrient-rich foods like leafy greens, carrots, sweet potatoes, and fish (hello, omega-3s!) help keep eyes healthy and developing well. Learn more about nutritional needs at every age.
4. Protect Eyes from the Sun
Just like skin, eyes can be damaged by UV rays. Sunglasses with 100% UVA/UVB protection are important—even on cloudy days.
