During June we celebrate Men’s Health Month by talking about some of the uncomfortable topics like testicular cancer, low testosterone, and the importance of regular doctor visits. While uncomfortable at times these topics should be discussed and normalized.

According to the Harvard Medical School, on average men tend to pay less attention to their health than women. They are more likely to drink alcohol, use tobacco, make risky choices, and not see a doctor for regular checkups. This makes Men’s Health Awareness Month incredibly important for bringing more attention to men’s overall health.

Tips for Living a Healthy Life

Regular Doctor Visits

Regular doctor visits are essential and should never be skipped. Many health issues, if/when caught early are more treatable/curable than if diagnosed in the later stages. These regular visits allow your doctor to catch any potential problems early.

Safety

As stated above, men are more likely to engage in risky behavior. This includes unprotected sex, not wearing a seatbelt, spending time in the sun without sunblock on, and much more. Put safety first and think about the potential consequences of your actions. A seatbelt may save your life if in an accident. Sunblock may prevent you from developing skin cancer. Practicing safe sex can help you avoid STDs that can have life-long effects. Put your health first and that means putting safety first.

Nutrition

Part of living a healthy life is nourishing your body properly. When it comes to a healthy diet, keep it simple. Stick to eating mainly whole foods from the outer edges of the grocery store and limit processed foods. Avoid fad diets. Think about following a diet plan that can be maintained for a lifetime.

Limit Alcohol

If you do indulge in alcoholic beverages aim for no more than 2 drinks per day.

Quit Tobacco Products

There is no good level of moderation when it comes to tobacco products. Do your health a favor and quit today.
